Algeria, Beyond a Single Label

Every few months, the same debate returns in Algeria.

Are we Arabs?
Are we Amazigh?
Are we Africans?
Are we Mediterranean?

And every time, people demand that I choose.

But why?

Why should I reduce centuries of history to a single word?

The land we call Algeria existed long before any of us were born. It has seen Amazigh kingdoms, Phoenician traders, Roman cities, Arab migrations, Islamic dynasties, Ottoman rule, French colonization, and a war of liberation that reshaped the modern world.

Every chapter left its mark.

So when someone asks me what Algeria is, I struggle to answer.

Not because I don’t know, but because there is too much to say.

How do you compress thousands of years of history into a single label?

How do you choose one thread and ignore the rest of the tapestry?

I refuse to choose.

Not because I reject any part of Algeria’s history, but because I embrace all of it.
